Mentor Feedback

Overall I would say my first mentoring experience is proving to be challenging, educational and rewarding.

Prior to meeting my mentee, I had steeled myself for what I imagined would be a misbehaving kid, so meeting a pleasant young man threw me a bit. Even still I remained alert should this not be his true colours and after a while I relaxed thinking there were no real problems. I soon realised that what I had here was a bright, charming and ambitious young man who did not have any idea of how to achieve or set his goals and was also not aware of the resources around him. It then dawned on me that the challenge was to equip him with the basic ideals and skills that would hopefully empower him to start achieving his potential.

In the earlier days of our mentoring meetings I had often questioned the impact of my input. Since then there have been several occasions where an activity I suggested has been successful and rewarding for my mentee and I particularly where it has brought about a positive change in behaviour.

With the support of the Urban Synergy team I hope to help him become more aware of the variety of possibilities available to him on a global scale and develop basic life skills that will enable him to be more than ’just a success’ in life but also be a significant person in the lives of others.
