Volunteer in New York – Summer 2009

Trevor ColeInfo

Each summer Winant Clayton Volunteers sends a group of Brits (called Claytons) of all ages and backgrounds to New York City to work in community-based projects (homelessness, mental health, children, inter-cultural relations).  At the same time a group of Americans (called Winants) come to East London to do the same.  If accepted, the Claytons must pay a modest programme fee which covers their airfare, dormitory-style accommodation, a stipend for food, a transit pass, and orientation and supervision in New York .  The work is full time, five days a week, for 7 weeks, and is followed by 2 weeks of independent travel.  Volunteers travel from London to New York in late June and return in early September.  Successful applicants will be given fundraising advice to help them raise money for the summer and bursaries may be available for people living in East London or of Irish descent.

Begun in the 1940’s as a way to increase cooperation and understanding between the US and the UK ,  Winant Clayton has thousands of alumni on both sides of the Atlantic who look back on the experience as an important personal growth experience in their lives.
